When You're Done Dying
When You’re Done Dying installation in its entirety represents the parking lot, entrance, and interior of an abandoned business in an alternate reality. Viewers move through the parking lot and into the interior of the business.
An awning has no cover and marks no entrance as it hangs on the gallery wall. A parking lot sign appears to have been pulled from the ground by indiscernible forces. The space feels cold but oddly inviting as each of these installation elements emit a cool fluorescent light that fills the gallery space. As people move into what would be the interior of the business, they might be confused at first, not sure what they are looking at. The floor is brightly lit as light dissipates up the walls. What viewers are encountering is 9-12 fluorescent shop ceiling fixtures hanging 6” off the ground aimed towards the floor in a grid pattern. Participants can move through this aspect of the installation by walking in between and around the fixtures.
Each of the installation pieces are made of cheap building materials found at DIY mega stores, not what actual store signage, ceiling lights, or awnings are made from. Foam, plywood, window screen and paint mimic metal and concrete.
